A Study on the Cognitive Mechanism of Positive-Negative Quantitative Continuum, by ZHONG Shuneng & LIANG Jiayi, p.73
Based on linguistic corpora, the present makes an attempt to probe into the semantic structures of both “吭声” (kengsheng)cluster and “缄口”(jiankou)cluster as polarity words in Chinese. It is revealed that “吭声” (kengsheng)cluster tends to be used in negative structures while “缄口”(jiankou)cluster in positive structures in Chinese, and it is also found that their corresponding English counterparts are also characterized by both positive structures and negative structures. In fact, it indicates that the positive-negative quantitative continuum as a cognitive mechanism actually governs the alterative construction of positive or negative structures in both Chinese and English. It is hoped that our research will be of help to cognitive linguistics and foreign language teaching and research in China.
A Study of “Words with Borrowed Meanings” in Chinese in the Light of Language Contact:A Corpus-based Study, by ZHU Yifan, p.79
This paper examines the phenomena of “Words with Borrowed Meanings” in contemporary Chinese with the aid of diachronic and synchronic corpora. The study reveals that meaning borrowing constantly occurs between “equivalents” of two languages and has its roots in the actual inequivalence between so-called “equivalents”. Besides, newly borrowed meanings are usually used in fixed collocations or contexts and seldom used independently. Newly borrowed meanings usually won’t cause any problem in understanding, but new meanings with cultural and emotional connotations may sometimes lead to obstacles in borrowing and understanding.
